Greenville High School Hockey
High school ice hockey in South Carolina continues to grow as more students discover the fast-paced sport and the teamwork it requires. The league structure is designed to support both competitive varsity play and player development. The National division represents the varsity level of competition, where games are full contact, allowing body checking and a more physical style of play similar to traditional competitive hockey. In contrast, the Palmetto division serves as the junior varsity level, providing a developmental environment for newer or younger players; this division is no-checking, emphasizing skating skills, puck movement, and game awareness while reducing physical contact. Together, these two divisions help create a balanced system that allows athletes in South Carolina high schools to develop their skills while competing at the level that best fits their experience and readiness.
Ages
High School hockey is based on which grade the player is currently enrolled in.
9th-12th grade students are eligible to participate on either the National (varsity) team or the Palmetto (JV) team.
8th grader students that are at least 13 years old are eligible to participate on the Palmetto (JV) team.
When
The High School regular season typically runs from August through February.
There is a state tournament for each division. The National division typically has the state tournament in early February with the champion earning a big to the USA Hockey National Tournament.
The Palmetto division can have their state tournament any time between early February and mid-March.
Where
Home games and practices for all high school teams are held at either the Ice Station or Pavilion.
Practices
The National team typically has 2 hours of practice per week during the regular season while the Palmetto team has about 3-4 practices per month.
Games
Most high school games for both divisions take place on Friday nights
Opponents
There are currently 4 high school clubs in South Carolina. Greenville, Columbia, Ft. Mill, and Charleston. Each club usually has 1 national team and 1 palmetto team. There are instances where clubs will create 2 teams in a division when there are enough players to do so.
